Karvol decongestant capsules (discontinued in the UK)

Karvol decongestant capsules contain various volatile, aromatic substances that have been used traditionally for many years as inhalations for their decongestant effect. The capsules are not taken by mouth; you snip the end off the capsule and squeeze the contents into hot water or onto a hankie and then inhale the vapour.

What is it used for?

  • Relieving the symptoms of a blocked nose.
  • Relieving the symptoms of head colds.

    How does it work?

Karvol decongestant capsules contain various volatile, aromatic substances that have been used traditionally for many years as inhalations for their decongestant effect. The capsules are not taken by mouth; you snip the end off the capsule and squeeze the contents into hot water or onto a hankie and then inhale the vapour.

The ingredients in Karvol decongestant capsules have mild decongestant properties and can relieve a blocked nose. They also have mild cooling effects that can soothe irritation in the lining of the nose.

If the capsule contents are added to hot water and you breathe in the vapour, the warm moisture inhaled in the steam will also help liquify and loosen mucus, allowing more effective clearance of the airways. This can relieve a cough as well as nasal congestion.

    How do I use it?

    • Karvol capsules must not be taken by mouth. Carefully snip the top off the capsule with a pair of scissors, pointing the top downwards, away from the face.
    • For older children and adults, snip the top off one Karvol capsule and squeeze the contents onto a tissue or hankie and inhale the vapour freely. Alternatively, squeeze the contents of one Karvol capsule into a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam. At nightime, the contents of a capsule can be squeezed onto the bedding or a hankie kept nearby, but avoid squeezing it onto an area where the skin will come into contact with it.
    • For babies over three months of age and young children, snip the top off one Karvol capsule and squeeze the contents onto a handkerchief tied securely near to, but out of the reach of, the child.

      Warning!

      • Karvol capsules must not be swallowed or taken internally. They are for inhalation use only.
      • Avoid getting the capsule contents in the eyes or nose, or on the skin. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the area well with water.
      • If symptoms persist consult your doctor.
