Prozen is a natural and safe dietary supplement for the relief of stress and anxiety, leading to a better night’s sleep and available without prescription.

A good night’s sleep is vital to stay healthy and perform at your best. Stress can keep you awake at night, making you feel even more stressed. Longer term stress can damage your health, affecting your immune, cardiovascular and nervous systems. It can lead to depression, anxiety and insomnia. Combatting stress can seem impossible. However, implementing stress management techniques can reduce some of the harmful effects. Following a healthy diet, taking regular exercise and allowing time for relaxation are some of the techniques. Taking Prozen can also help.

Ingredients

Prozen contains Suntheanine, the trade name for a well-researched, patented form of a unique amino acid (L-theanine) found in the green tea plant.  The health benefits of green tea are attributed to this unique amino acid. For centuries the Chinese have recommended green tea for headaches, indigestion, depression and relaxation. Clinical trials show that Suntheanine stimulates the brain to generate more alpha waves. Alpha waves let you relax without drowsiness and reduce aches and pains caused by stress. Suntheanine may also help to prevent depression, lift mood and improve sleep quality. It has also brought relief to women suffering from symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) by helping to modulate mood and creating a relaxed state.

To date, no known drug interaction or side effects have been reported with the use of Suntheanine.

For improved sleep, take two to four capsules 30 minutes before bedtime.

Do not discontinue any prescribed medication without first discussing with your healthcare practitioner.

Pharmacological action:

Prozen contains L-theanine a non-protein, amino acid derivative of L-glutamic acid, mainly found naturally in the green tea plant (Camellia sinensis). L-theanine is the predominant amino acid in green tea and makes up 50% of the total free amino acids in the plant.

Prozen creates an alert yet totally relaxed state of mind without drowsiness. This brand of L-theanine is clinically proven to reduce emotional and physical stress, improve the quality of sleep and diminish normal symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It heightens mental awareness and reduces any negative side effects of caffeine.

The pharmacokinetics of L-theanine in humans is relatively unknown. Animal studies show that L-theanine is absorbed from the small intestine via a sodium-coupled active transport process. It penetrates the blood-brain barrier through the leucine-preferring transport system. Serum L-theanine concentration reaches a peak between 30 minutes and 2 hours after oral administration in rats. The effects of L-theanine are felt after 30 minutes of consumption. Excretion is via the kidneys.

Mode of action:

Research on human volunteers has demonstrated that L-theanine creates a sense of relaxation in approximately 30-40 minutes after ingestion via at least two different mechanisms. First, it directly stimulates the production of alpha brain waves, creating a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness similar to what is achieved through meditation. Second, it is involved in the formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) which is known for counterbalancing the stimulatory effects of too much glutamate (one of the body’s major excitatory neurotransmitters).

L-theanine has been shown to produce significant increases in monoamine and dopamine concentrations in the brain, principally in the striatum, hypothalamus and hippocampus. Dopamine is the brain’s master regulator of reward and pleasure and it is the release of dopamine which may contribute to the sense of well-being associated with taking L-theamine.

Suntheanine as L-theanine

Suntheanine is a patented formula of enzymatically synthesised L-theanine, an amino acid found in the green tea plant. L-theanine is similar to L-tryptophan which is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin.  Suntheanine is L-theanine of the highest purity and efficacy.

L-theanine gives green tea its characteristic flavour and the Chinese have long recognised its health benefits. It is a powerful stress and anxiety reliever which can alleviate depression. It

    • reduces both mental and physical stress
    • acts as a sleep aid
    • increases concentration
    • lowers blood pressure (only in those who have high blood pressure)
    • reduces heart rate
    • induces a state of well-being and relaxation by increasing the secretion of GABA (the brain’s own tranquiliser, helping it to calm itself)
    • helps with symptoms of PMS
  • has no known side-effects

This is supported by research. Human clinical trials show that Suntheanine can reduce anxiety and stress levels, by relaxing the brain and increasing alpha wave activity. Alpha waves occur when you are awake and alert but relaxed. It is non-drowsy and may also improve a person’s attention span and concentration. It can safely be given to children. Green tea was used traditionally by Buddhist monks to keep them calm and awake during long hours of meditation. The combination of L-theanine and caffeine appears to help alertness and energy levels without having any side effects.

A clinical study in Tokyo, Japan, showed that Suntheanine can help to improve sleep quality but is not a sedative.  Suntheanine did not increase the duration of sleep, it merely helped those to sleep better by allowing the mind to relax and recuperate.

L-theanine prevents damage to brain cells by blocking overstimulation of the cells and protects brain cells from being impaired when oxygen levels are low. It also promotes production of new brain cells by stimulating release of a protein necessary for nerve growth.

L-theanine also acts as an anti-oxidant benefitting the cardiovascular system by promoting production of nitric oxide (dilating blood vessels in the arteries). L-theanine may consequently reduce blood pressure and decrease risk for cardiovascular disease.  Research is also on going regarding its properties as a cancer therapy, possibly inhibiting the growth of certain tumours.

Suntheanine was awarded the “Food Ingredient Research Award” at the 1998 Food Ingredients Europe and “Best New Product of 2000″ at Nutracon.
